Edition 01 · Week of 13 July 2026
Why this page exists
This started as a Sunday message to a group chat. Enough people asked the same question — what should I actually install? — that answering it once a week in public turned out to be less work than answering it five times in private.

What the Herald is for
Editorial noteNews about big mobile games is scattered across a dozen places, and almost none of it answers the practical question: is this worth my evening, and what is it actually like to play right now? A weekly page can answer that in a way a scoreboard cannot.
So there are no scores here, and there is no attempt to cover everything. Six or so mainstream games, revisited as they change, written up in a page you can read in three minutes.
Clash of Clans
Strategy · Supercell
The obvious place to start, because it is the game most people have either played or been invited to. It is a base-building game where progress runs on timers, which means it fits into a day rather than filling one.
Whether you enjoy it comes down to one question: do you like the idea of a project you tend to, or do you want a game that gives you everything in the session you are currently in?
Temple Run 2
Endless runner · Imangi Studios
Included in the first edition on purpose, as a baseline. It is old, it is simple, it runs on anything, and it is still a good game. Every newer thing we write about is implicitly being compared to how immediately this one works.
Asphalt Legends Unite
Racing · Gameloft
The showpiece of the group and the one most likely to strain an older phone. Worth knowing before you install it rather than after: check your handset can handle it, and turn the settings down first if you are unsure.
